REQUIREMENTS : Applicants must be in possession of a National diploma or Bachelor’s (B.Sc.)
degree in Agriculture with Plant Pathology, Entomology and/or Animal Diseases
as a major subject(s) as well as a Dog Training or Dog Handling Certificate (you
are required to furnish a credit certificate and/or statement of results). Knowledge
of the Agricultural Pests Act, 1983 (Act 36 of 1983), the Animal Diseases Act,
1984 (Act 35 of 1984), the Meat Safety Act, 2000 (Act 40 of 2000), the Plant
Improvement Act,1976 (Act 53 of 1976), the Agriculture Product Standards Act,
1990 (Act 119 of 1990), the Genetically Modified Organisms Act, 1997 (Act 15 of
1997) and the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock
Remedies Act, 1947 (Act 36 of 1947) as well as various relevant international
guidelines and rules. Knowledge of canine motivation, dog psychology, behaviour
patterns, olfactory perceptions and abilities. The ability to interpret regulatory
information and standard operating procedures. Good communication and
analytical skills as well as the ability to work well under pressure. Computer skills
in MS Office software. Willingness to travel and work away from home/office on
short notice, work shifts at the ports as well as irregular hours. A valid driver’s
licence and the ability to drive.
DUTIES : The incumbent will be responsible to handle detector dogs for the examination of
passenger, baggage, cargo and international mail for regulated articles in
compliance to various relevant international guidelines and obligations. Interview
passengers, inspect suspect baggage, cargo trucks, busses and other vehicles
as well as take appropriate risk management actions for non-compliant regulated
products. Leading a team of Agricultural Food and Quarantine Technicians and
manage the K9 at Beitbridge Land Border Post. Work with other Governmental
departments that are also responsible for international travellers. Assist
Agricultural Food and Quarantine Technicians at secondary inspections when not
conducting dog handling duties. Maintain and assist other dog handlers with
canine health, well-being and training. Perform demonstrations or public relations
activities when requested. Supervise dog handler assistant(s). Represent the
Department on forums and meetings.
